Obesity vs. Income
Analysis: Write a 250 word analysis describing the relationship between the two variables. Is there a relationship between these variables? Use specific geographic references. Why do you think a relationship exists?
There does seem to be a relationship between the 2010 median household income and the obesity levels in 2010. The places with a higher income have a lower obesity level. The places towards the south, such as Texas and Mississippi have lower income and higher obesity levels. This is portrayed in the maps because the darker colors contrast with the lighter colors in the maps, so if there is a dark color, symbolizing obesity, it corresponds with a lighter color in the income map, portraying lower income. Colorado has one of the highest median incomes in the United States of America and that state is also one of the few that has a low obesity rate.
The states in the southern middle part of the US have the most obese people compared to the people on the coast of the country. It may have to do with the temperature or the food served in those places.
I think that there is a relationship because places with lower income can’t afford foods that are as nutritious as places with a higher income. So with places with lower income people residing there, more places like fast food (which have high calories) will be there as well. Places with wealthier people will have more organic foods because the wealthier will be able to afford more expensive food. They probably wouldn’t want to eat fast food either.
