A Day At Dana Point
During the Dana Point field trip, my group started on the boat. We went out onto the front of the boat and it was freezing… There were pelicans flying around when the boat was departing from the dock. After a few minutes in the water, a group of dolphins appeared around our boat. They followed us for a while and fell back when they couldn’t catch up to the boat. When heading back to the dock, we spotted a whale near the coast. When we returned back to the dock, the instructors showed us how to identify fish, plankton, and sea creatures such as sea stars and blood worms.
After lunch, we were led around to work in some workshops. One of my favorites was the dissection of the mackerel. It was fun cutting into it and finding out what its last meal was. Sadly, some of the fish had eaten cigarettes that were floating in the water. It would have led to death if it wasn’t already dead… After the dissections, we did a lab to determine the oxygen and salinity of the water. Pure water, aquarium water and salt water was used in the experiment. We left after Dana Point after having a discussion about how jellyfish reproduce.
